  • Interstate 74 (I-74) cuts across the top of Champaign, running north-east to Peoria and west to Indianapolis.
  • Interstate 57 (I-57) starts across the border in Missouri and continues north through Illinois, connecting Champaign to Chicago.
  • US Route 45 (US 45) is a major north-south highway which runs parallel to I-57 in Illinois and passes straight through downtown Champaign.

How to get from Champaign to Chicago

It takes around two hours to drive the 134 miles from Champaign to the Windy City. Start on New Market Street and, after four miles, turn right to merge on to I-57 North. Continue along the I-57 for 118 miles, then join the I-94 and follow the I-90 Express into downtown Chicago.

How to get from Champaign to Indianapolis

The capital of Indiana is also just a two-hour drive from Champaign:

  1. Head north on Neil Street and take the slip road on your right to merge on to I-74.
  2. Continue heading east along I-74 for 111 miles.
  3. Keep left to stay on I-74 and follow signs to join I-465 South.
  4. Take Exit 13 and then use the left two lanes to turn left on to Rockville Road.
  5. As you approach Eagle Creek, bear left on to West Washington Street and continue into Indianapolis.
