Paraffin Wax bath: Whoever it was who recommended... - PMRGCAuk (2024)

Whoever it was who recommended this THANK YOU.

I ordered one, it came yesterday. I used it twice. Have used it twice again today. It is so soothing.

It came with some wax but not enough so I have to do some careful jiggery pokery to get the right parts of my hands coated.

My hands felt so comfortable overnight.

I've ordered more wax so it will be easier.

That was me! Glad to hear it worked for you. A friend's daughter uses one therapeutically on her hands as she has a form of juvenile arthritis. It's something used in healthcare as well as beauty. It also keeps the skin soft too xxx

What are you recommending it for?

PMRproAmbassador in reply tomarionofnorwich

It is a gentle heat therapy used for pain and stiffness in hands which can be due to OA, muscular problems or after surgery.

Ah thanks. Does it work on other body parts?

S4ndy in reply tomarionofnorwich

You can use it on feet too but that needs a big wax heater and a fair bit of paraffin wax. I've had it done once to help with dry skin on feet at beauty salon.

I've ordered more wax as this is not quite enough to engulf my hand. There is room for a foot and I will need to take care if I do my feet lol

The devices available are aimed at hands and feet:

Over here in central Europe they are very keen on fango packs - mud packs, Physios make up all sorts of sizes from large enough to lie on and wrap your entire trunk from shoulders to upper legs down to the size of my computer screen (22x8inches or so) to lay 2 side by side for lower and upper back. Usually you lie on a sheet or towel with the pack in place and it is wrapped round you so you can lie and stew nicely for maybe half an hour until the blood flow in the muscles is stimulated and the muscles relax. It is often done before you have a therapeutic massage to improve the effect.

You'd get a similar effect from an electric blanket of the sort you can lie on or wraps - they aren't very hot or you would burn. The difference is that electric blankets are dry heat and the parafin and fango heating is a more moist heat that is sometimes more effective. This shows a range of the sort of thing you can get.

Sounds amazing. I would need to sleep for hours afterwards.

Will definitely do my feet once I have more wax. Will nlist help from him indoors.

IdasMum in reply toS4ndy

Thank you. I'm leaving it switched on as it takes 2+ hours to come to temperature.

S4ndy in reply toIdasMum

If I remember rightly the heaters are very low kwh and thermostatically controlled so shouldn't cost too much to leave on. Just make sure it won't get knocked over though as it's a devil to clean up the spilt wax!

IdasMum in reply toS4ndy

It should be fine where it is. I might move it further away from the edge of the table.

Stills in reply toS4ndy

I have Adult onset Stills disease a form of JRA diagnosed aged 17 now 62 and wrist pain ever present. Do you know if this is what your friends daughter has? If the bath works for her I will definitely try it so very interested.

S4ndy in reply toStills

Sorry I don't know her actual diagnosis. Her hands look like claws when she has a flare up and the wax bath helps her to be able to move her hands more freely.

Stills in reply toS4ndy

My hands don’t look like that it’s mainly swelling, pain and immobility but I’ll still look into it as every little helps 😃 other supermarket catch phrases are available 🤣

PMRproAmbassador in reply toStills

Think RA is one of the things they are recommended for. Often you can try them at the physio department to see if it is worth investing in for yourself.

Thank you
